Customisable Short Strings

Secco Strings is a highly customisable collection of Viola, Violin, Cello and Bass recordings. Each Instrument has 3 available articulations (Pizzicato, Peck and Bounce) and 3 Play Modes (Single Notes, Rhythm and Texture). You can also import up to 4 sets of your own samples using Drag ‘n’ Drop (Kontakt 6 only). Two fully automatable XY Pads allow you to customise your sound in dynamic and highly creative ways. The Main XY Pad can be assigned to various parameters (Panning, Direction, Formant and Octave). You can also add up to 15 unique steps and assign a different articulation to each step. The Tone XY Pad is used to adjust the main tone according to different playing styles (Bridge, Fingerboard, Finger, Pick).

SINGLE NOTES MODE
In Single Notes Mode you can assign up to 8 different steps. Each step can have its own instrument and articulation assigned. The position of each step on the XY pad determines volume, panning, direction (reverse), fomant and octave for every step independently. move the microphone (and each step) around to dynamically alter the sound.

RHYTHM MODE
In Rhythm Mode steps play sequentially. Number of Steps and Time-Division can be adjusted. The Jitter control is used to add a fluctuation to each step to give motion and realism to the sound. Rhythm Mode also contains an arpeggiator button to arpeggiate through all played notes. 8 steps can be assigned in Rhythm Mode.

TEXTURE MODE
In Texture Mode the engine will cycle through each step at a user-definable speed enabling you to create swarms, textures, chaos, ensembles and effects. Each step will randomly move and bounce off each other (and the walls) using physics. Texture Mode also contains a ‘Distribute’ button which allows you to play the steps in parallel. Each note you play gets assigned to a step and it cycles through each of those steps. 15 steps can be assigned in Texture Mode.

IMPORT YOUR OWN SAMPLES
Secco Strings contains 4 user instrument slots enabling you to import your own samples. Take advantage of the unique Secco engine and use your own sounds. Drag and Drop your own samples onto one of the four slots to import. This feature is only available for Kontakt 6 users.

Each one was made with deep velocity considerations, intricate sound design, and careful attention to EQ. There are, with much faith, at least 40 you will love, if not more. Those patches with an appended “+” have XY controls, as per the convention. The sound demo features my personal favorite patches, but they can be used for almost anything, primarily ambient and electronica music.

Russian Folk Series

Most persons would assume that the balalaika predates the domra. In fact, the domra is known to have existed for over 1000 years; the balalaika only about 350. Musicologists have reached a clear conclusion: the domra and balalaika are two different versions of the same kind of stringed instrument, with the domra being the balalaika’s ancestor. The domra is a Russian folk instrument, popular among sixteenth century Russian musician/jesters called “buffoons”. In 1648, by order of the king the persecution of buffoons quickly resulted in the disappearance of the domra. “Re-discovered” in 1896, it was reconstructed by master luthiers Andreev and Nalimov, and has since evolved into today’s three orchestral versions: (small, alto, bass) with a quarter tone scale.

Thereafter, the domra was immediately introduced to academic music, and as a group dormas have become an indispensable part of the Russian National Orchestra, used as a melodic base. Additionally, the domra is becoming widely accepted as a solo instrument, written into many current musical pieces and concerts.

The hulusi or cucurbit flute is a free reed wind instrument from China. It is held vertically and has three bamboo pipes which pass through a gourd wind chest; the center pipe has finger holes and the outer two are typically drone pipes. It is not uncommon for a hulusi to have only one drone pipe while the second outer pipe is merely ornamental. The drone pipe has a finger hole, which allows it to be stopped. Advanced configurations have keyed finger holes similar to a clarinet or oboe, which can greatly extend the range of the hulusi to several octaves.

The hulusi was originally used primarily in the Yunnan province by the Dai-along with other southern Chinese ethnic groups who called it “bilangdao”. It has since gained nationwide popularity, similar to the harmonica in the West. “Improved” versions have been produced outside of the indigenous realms. Like the related free reed pipe called bawu, the hulusi has a very pure, clarinet-like sound.
